A submission from
Bobby Sanders, Littleton, NC
The old cane mill was located south of Elizabeth City, NC just off of Hwy 17. My grandfather owned it (Joseph Sanders). The young boy in the picture is my father (Bobby W. Sanders Sr.) at the age of 14 years. That would have been about 1944. The black gentleman is a hired hand and the other fellow is my dad's cousin (name unknown). If you look close at the picture, you will see steam coming from the cooker in the back under the tin roof. My dad said it was the best syrup he had ever had.....I guess it got better over the years (memories tend to do that). He would tell me stories of cold mornings, cool syrup and hot biscuits....I get hungry every time I think of them. |
